With bosses facing a skills shortage, many of them are thinking the previously unthinkable and considering re-hiring a worker they’ve already sacked.
As many as nine in every 20 managers in the tech sector would consider hiring an employee they’d previously let go, according to research by Randstad UK. The recruiting firm surveyed 500 tech managers and found that although a high proportion would consider taking on staff members they’d let go, a higher proportion (55%) would not.
Nonetheless, the fact that nearly 50% of bosses in the tech sector would consider taking sacked staff back on is a reflection of just how desperate the talent crisis has got. A combination of COVID, Brexit and the Great Resignation has led to skills shortages in every sector in the UK, including the tech sector.
The tech sector now accounts for one in eight jobs in the UK, according to Adzuna data for the Digital Economy Council, and by September 2021, made up 13% of all job vacancies. Recruiters within the sector are offering high salaries – research released by Hays revealed that tech roles dominated the top 20 salary increases for 2021 – but nonetheless, the tech sector is still facing a struggle for staff.
